A replacement dwelling on a small holding in west sussex. SELFBUILD

The existing cottage, office and outbuildings are to be replaced with a new house+stable block + outbuildings.

The proposals are to extensively overhaul a small cottage set within a five acre plot and produce a modern family home whilst retaining the external feel of a traditional rural house.

The building is of traditional construction with brick, render+clay tile roof. with oak beams, doors+windows.

The existing orchard to the property is to be retained as a small formal garden.

Many old properties are altered over their lifetimes, either in keeping with the original (economic construction methods had not developed) or reflecting the good building practice of that time.

The client wanted the new house to look as if it had always been there. A considerable effort was made to produce a sensitive ‘extension’ retaining as much of the existing house as possible, yet creating a ‘new house’.

The existing cottage is shown in a blue tone.

The profile of the existing cottage is shown dotted on the elevations.

The proposed house, retains the lowered eaves + the capped hips of the original and neighbouring properties.

The glazing to the rear of the property overlooks the orchard + 5 acres of paddock.
