Kiln Close, Mevagissey, Cornwall.

This small development for a Cornish family on a redundant quarry / fishing lure factory within the historic sardine fishing village of Mevagissey, Cornwall.

The site was very challenging as it was very precipitous with a sheer drop of 7m onto the properties on the high-street below. The site had to be cleared of the family run factory buildings and years of detritus left over from the slate quarry.

The design was developed in close liaison with Mevagissey Parish Council with whom a great deal of trust was established, as they had previously been mis-lead by property developers. The site is located within a conservation area. The design incorporates numerous details of traditional houses in the Town.

The proposal comprises a terrace of 3 worker cottages and a detached house.

Providing much needed homes for LOCAL people.

The site required extensive structural ground works to maintain the stability of the slate.

The sequencing of the construction required careful management, to enable the machinery and materials to be hosted in and out of the site. We formed part of the Construction management team, closely involved with the construction methodology. The houses were partly prefabricated off-site and were craned-in via a temporary platform.

Part of the retaining structure was constructed using gabion walls, which were planted with indigenous species wall plants.
